معرفی
Dr. John Rafferty is a Reader in Structural Biology at the University of Sheffield's School of Biosciences. He has held this position since 2005, following roles as a Royal Society Olga Kennard Fellow (1999–2004) and BBSRC David Phillips Research Fellow (1996–1999). His research focuses on structural biology, particularly studying enzymes, DNA recombination proteins, and bacterial virulence factors using X-ray crystallography and biophysical techniques.
Key career milestones include structural analyses of Holliday junction resolvases (RuvA, RusA), phage helicase loaders, and bacterial transport proteins. His work has advanced understanding of DNA repair mechanisms and enzyme-ligand interactions in pathogenic bacteria like Campylobacter jejuni and Bacteroidetes species.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating the Level 1 Biochemistry module (MBB161) and contributing to advanced courses in molecular biosciences. He serves as an external examiner at the University of Birmingham.
- Education: PhD in Biophysics (Leeds University, 1986–1990)
- Labs/Teams: Structural Biology Group at Sheffield, collaborating with researchers like Sedelnikova SE and Rice DW on DNA recombination and enzyme structure.
- Grants: Funded by BBSRC, Royal Society, and Wellcome Trust for projects on bacterial pathogenesis and protein engineering.
