Ruoli Chen

Dr. Ruoli Chen is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the School of Allied Health Professions and Pharmacy, Keele University. He completed his PhD in clinical physiology at Imperial College London (2002) and held postdoctoral fellowships at King’s College London and University of Oxford.

• Current research focuses on stroke medicine, HIF pathways, and blood-brain barrier integrity
• Collaborates with Oxford groups led by Profs. Alastair Buchan and Chris Schofield
• Teaches the Keele University MPharm program

His work explores pharmacological HIF accumulation for neuroprotection, stem cell culture under hypoxia, and blood-brain barrier function in aging/neurodegeneration. Publications emphasize neuroprotective mechanisms, HIF inhibitors, and astrocyte responses in stroke. The team investigates novel PHD inhibitors for stem cell expansion and BBB protection in ischemia models. Collaborative projects include Alzheimer’s disease therapies and hypoxia preconditioning effects.
