Alastair Buchan

Prof Alastair Buchan is the Professor of Stroke Medicine and Academic Lead for Medicine at Oxford in Berlin, affiliated with the University of Oxford's Radcliffe Department of Medicine. He leads the Laboratory of Cerebral Ischaemia, focusing on neuroprotective strategies for acute stroke treatment. His research integrates cell biology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine to identify novel therapies and biomarkers. Key interests include hypoxia-inducible factor pathways, proteomic/metabolomic biomarkers, and improving rtPA efficacy.

He co-leads the Responsible Research and Innovation Group addressing societal engagement, gender equality, and ethical practices in translational medicine. Collaborations include STARBIOS2 and the US National Initiative on Gender, Culture and Leadership in Medicine. His work is funded by Horizon2020 and NIHR.

Recent publications emphasize circadian medicine’s role in stroke, posterior circulation stroke management, and rapamycin’s effects on cerebral perfusion. He advocates for gender equity in academic leadership through Athena SWAN initiatives.
