Rune Lindahl-Jacobsen is a Professor in Epidemiology and Biodemography at the University of Southern Denmark's Faculty of Health Sciences, affiliated with the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography (EBB) department and the Interdisciplinary Center on Population Dynamics (CPop). He holds an ORCID identifier 0000-0002-4622-9826 and serves as Project Manager for Denmark's Health and Morbidity Surveys at the National Institute of Public Health.
His educational background includes a Professional Postgraduate Teacher Training from the University of Southern Denmark (2008), a PhD from Copenhagen University (2004), and an MSc from Roskilde University (1996). His research spans critical areas of population health with particular emphasis on demographic transitions and reproductive challenges.
Lindahl-Jacobsen's research focuses on epidemiological patterns in mortality, fertility, and reproduction, with significant contributions to understanding declining human fecundity and sex differences in life expectancy. His work integrates biodemographic approaches with clinical epidemiology, particularly examining how assisted reproductive technologies impact long-term health outcomes and how environmental factors influence reproductive health. Recent publications reveal increasing attention to the crisis in human reproduction and cardiovascular risks in occupational settings.
His publication trends show consistent leadership in cohort studies analyzing Danish population health data, with growing emphasis on reproductive decline and its societal implications. The 2025 publications particularly highlight urgent concerns about falling pregnancy rates and semen quality deterioration.
As an educator, he leads courses including 'Introduction to Research Methodology' and 'Biodemography, Projection and Population Dynamics.' His current research includes the ongoing project 'Health among Danish seafarers, fishermen and offshore workers' (2022-2025), examining occupational health risks in maritime industries. He actively contributes to public discourse through media appearances addressing demographic challenges like declining birth rates.
Lindahl-Jacobsen directs the Health Unit on Biodemography at CPop and previously served as Deputy Head of the Max Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging (2014-2018). His team collaborates internationally on population health studies, with recent projects comparing Nordic healthcare systems and investigating microchimerism's role in mortality.
