Rumman Chowdhury is a leading figure in applied algorithmic ethics and responsible AI. She holds academic affiliations as a Responsible AI Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and a Research Affiliate at the Minderoo Center for Democracy and Technology at the University of Cambridge. Her work intersects technology, policy, and societal impact, with a focus on mitigating algorithmic harms and fostering ethical AI development.
She earned two undergraduate degrees from MIT, a master’s in Quantitative Methods of the Social Sciences from Columbia University, and a PhD in Political Science from UC San Diego. Her career includes roles as Director of Twitter’s META team, CEO of Parity (an enterprise algorithmic audit platform), and Global Lead for Responsible AI at Accenture. She co-founded the nonprofit Humane Intelligence and chairs the Parity Responsible Innovation venture fund.
Chowdhury’s research interests span AI ethics, global governance, and the societal implications of emerging technologies. She advocates for inclusive red-teaming exercises, third-party oversight, and policies that balance innovation with accountability. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, MIT Technology Review, and more.
She serves on numerous boards, including the UK Center for Data Ethics and Innovation, UNESCO’s Broadband Commission, and AI4All.
