Rukmini Balu is an Adjunct Professor of Global Health at Duke University and currently serves as Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff in the Duke Office of Durham and Community Affairs (DCA). In this role, she oversees strategic planning, community engagement initiatives, and organizational effectiveness to support Duke’s partnerships with local and global communities. Previously, she held leadership roles including Chief of Staff to the Chancellor for Health Affairs and Director of Strategy at Duke Medicine Global, where she developed global health projects and partnerships.
Dr. Balu holds a PhD in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and BS/MS degrees in Zoology and Immunology from India. Her teaching focuses on social determinants of health, with courses at Duke, Peking University, and Duke Kunshan University. Her professional experience spans pharmaceutical R&D, venture capital in life sciences, and nonprofit environmental health advocacy.
Her research and work emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to global health challenges, integrating academic, clinical, and community-based strategies. She has contributed to building scalable models for global health initiatives and fostering collaboration between institutions and communities.
