Dr Ruissein Mahon is a Lecturer in Energy Engineering at Robert Gordon University's School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, where she contributes significantly to both teaching and research in the critical area of energy transition. As a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Fellow of multiple professional societies including the Women's Engineering Society, Geological Society, and Royal Society of Arts, she brings substantial industry credibility to her academic role.
Her research interests span Renewable Energy Systems, Low Carbon Operations, Carbon Capture and Storage, and Hydrogen Energy Systems, with a particular focus on integrating these technologies into existing oil & gas infrastructure. Dr Mahon's work addresses the practical challenges of transitioning the North Sea energy sector toward net zero while maintaining energy security.
Her 15 most recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a strong focus on practical energy transition solutions, with recurring themes of carbon management in legacy infrastructure, hydrogen economy development, and sustainable engineering education. The research demonstrates both technical depth in subsurface engineering challenges and broader perspectives on educational approaches for the energy workforce of the future.
- RGU Student STAR Awards - Recognition with Distinction (2025)
- Fellow of the Women's Engineering Society (2025)
- Certified Management and Business Educator (2025)
- Fellow of The Geological Society (2024)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (2024)
- Chartered Engineer (2023)
As Director of Studies for PhD research on green hydrogen production and carbon sequestration, Dr Mahon actively mentors the next generation of energy engineers. Her research on engineering education, gender diversity in STEM, and AI in the classroom demonstrates her commitment to developing effective teaching approaches for the energy transition. She is a member of Robert Gordon University's Sustainable Energy Research Group, where her work bridges traditional petroleum engineering expertise with emerging low-carbon technologies.
