Peter Mahon

Peter Mahon is a Senior Lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology within the School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies. He holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Deakin University and has extensive research experience in electrochemistry, energy storage, and analytical chemistry, with prior postdoctoral and industrial roles in Australia, the USA, and Canada.

His research interests span electrochemistry, battery technology (lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur, lead-acid), hydrogen storage, materials engineering, PFAS remediation, and sustainable energy. He employs advanced techniques such as spectro-electrochemistry, X-ray imaging, and machine learning for high-throughput analysis in food and environmental applications.

Dr. Mahon's recent publications (2023–2025) focus on battery heterogeneity, hydrogen storage from biomass, electrochemical sensing, and PFAS removal using MIEX® resin. His work shows a strong trend toward sustainable materials, second-life batteries, and environmental applications of electrochemical methods.

He has received the Fellowship from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) in 2018.

Dr. Mahon actively supervises PhD and Master’s students on topics including hydrogen storage, CO2 reduction, battery technologies, and bioanalytical screening. He has secured multiple research grants from CSIRO, Swinburne University, and industry partners such as IXOM and Leidos Australia, focusing on battery technologies, carbon capture, and PFAS remediation.

He leads research in laboratory-based electrochemical systems and collaborates with industry and national research organizations on applied energy and environmental projects.
