Rui Maia is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the P. Ferreira Research Group, focusing on advancing energy storage technologies through in situ microscopy and electrochemical analysis. His work emphasizes real-time observation of battery interfaces using liquid-phase TEM and multivariate statistical techniques. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Porto (2013), a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech (2018), and postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania (2021).
Before joining academia, he led the electrocatalysis group at Net4CO2 Incubation Laboratory in Porto and later drove technical development of sodium-ion batteries at Simoldes Energy. His research integrates meso/microfluidic reactors with advanced characterization tools to study catalyst degradation, particle nucleation, and battery interface evolution.
Key technical contributions include developing near-atomic-scale analysis methods for battery anodes and elucidating CO2 effects on copper catalyst stability. His interdisciplinary approach bridges materials science, electrochemistry, and environmental chemistry.
