Arnaud Demortière is a CNRS Research Officer (CR1) at the Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (LRCS) in Amiens, France, a joint unit of CNRS and the University of Picardie Jules Verne. He heads the RS2E microscopy platform, specializing in advanced in situ characterization of energy storage materials and perovskite systems.
Education:
- PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Pierre & Marie Curie University (Paris), 2007
- Master's in Condensed Matter, University of Lyon, 2003
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Argonne National Laboratory (DoE fellowship), 2010-2013
- Postdoctoral Fellow, CNRS IPCMS Laboratory, Strasbourg, 2007-2009
His research pioneers liquid electrochemical TEM using Protochips 510 holders to observe real-time reactions in LiFePO4, Na-ion, Li-S, silicon, and graphene battery systems. He integrates high-resolution aberration-corrected TEM, TXM tomography, and 3D image analysis to study structural evolution during electrochemical cycling, with expertise in developing specialized in situ electrochemical cells for synchrotron radiation. His work bridges nanoscale material behavior with macroscopic battery performance.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a dominant trend in multimodal in situ characterization, combining TEM with mass spectrometry and synchrotron techniques to probe interfacial evolution, degradation mechanisms, and reaction dynamics across lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-sulfur technologies. Key contributions include real-time observation of spinodal decomposition in perovskites and electrochemical reaction mapping in Na-ion anodes.
Active Research Projects:
- Horizon 2020 NAIADES: Advanced TEM for Na-ion battery demonstration
- Horizon 2020 HELIS: TEM/TXM for high-energy lithium-sulfur cells
- ANR Deli Redox: TEM/SEM characterization of Li-rich cathodes (Tarascon-led)
- Picardy WONDERFUL: Micro-fluidics in liquid TEM for redox flow batteries (Franco-led)
- GDR-CNRS NANOPERANDO: Management office for operando characterization network
As head of the RS2E microscopy platform, Demortière leads a national facility providing cutting-edge electron microscopy services to the French Network on Electrochemical Energy Storage. His team develops next-generation in situ methodologies to address fundamental challenges in battery interface stability and nanoscale reaction mapping, directly supporting European energy storage innovation initiatives.
