Rudolph G. Buchheit is the Dean of the University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering since July 1, 2018. Previously, he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Ohio State University and chaired their Materials Science and Engineering department for 8 years. His leadership oversaw 350+ faculty, 8,500 undergraduates, and a $240M operating budget with significant research expenditures.
- Bachelor's: Engineering Science, Loyola University-Maryland
- Master's/PhD: Materials Science, University of Virginia
Research focuses on corrosion science and engineering, particularly the electrochemistry of aluminum alloys, corrosion modeling, and protective coatings. He pioneered studies on intermetallic phase dissolution and chromate-free corrosion protection methods.
Recent publications highlight work on vanadate inhibitors for magnesium alloys, microelectrochemical analysis of aluminum intermetallics, and functional organic coatings. His research spans 25+ years of contributions to aerospace material durability and concrete reinforcement corrosion monitoring.
