Rudolph G. Buchheit serves as the Rebecca Burchett Liebert Dean of the University of Kentucky's College of Engineering, a role he has held since July 2018. Previously, he was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Administration at Ohio State University's College of Engineering, overseeing a large faculty-student-staff network and a $240M budget. His research focuses on corrosion science, particularly in aluminum alloys and corrosion-resistant coatings, with expertise in electrochemistry and surface engineering.
Buchheit earned a B.S. in Engineering Science from Loyola University Maryland, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Virginia. He chaired Ohio State's Materials Science & Engineering Department (2006–2014) and worked at Sandia National Laboratories. He is a Fellow of NACE International and the Electrochemical Society, and has received awards including the H.H. Uhlig Educator’s Award and the Morris Cohen Award.
His work emphasizes corrosion modeling, inhibition, and material durability, with applications in aerospace and structural materials. Key research contributions include studies on intermetallic phases, conversion coatings, and chromate-free alternatives. He has advised numerous graduate students and led initiatives promoting diversity in engineering education.
