Prof. Dr. Rudolf Schäfer is an Adjunct Professor for Magnetic Materials at Technische Universität Dresden and Head of the Department of Magnetic Microstructures at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW Dresden). With over 30 years of experience in magnetic materials research, he specializes in domain wall dynamics, magnetization reversal mechanisms, and advanced magnetic imaging techniques.
- Head of Department 'Magnetic Microstructures', IFW Dresden (since 2002)
- Adjunct Professor, TU Dresden (since 2011)
- Ombudsperson for IFW (1996-2011)
His research focuses on magnetic microstructures in thin films, bulk materials, and nanoscale systems, utilizing techniques like Kerr microscopy, neutron dark-field imaging, and wide-field MOKE magnetometry. He has published >200 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored 2 monographs.
Recent publications analyze magnetic bubble formation in Nd2Fe14B (2022), domain wall oscillations in Landau structures (2022), and 3D biomimetic magnetic architectures (2022). These works span disciplines including spintronics, soft magnetic alloys, and topological magnetism.
Awards include the IEEE Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer (2013). He chairs the Conference Executive Committee of the IEEE Magnetics Society and has supervised numerous collaborative research projects with institutions like IBM Research, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and international universities.
