Ruby Lekwauwa, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University Department of Psychiatry. She holds dual roles as Associate Program Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) & Resident Wellbeing and Engagement in the Yale General Psychiatry Residency Program, and Interim Deputy Chair for DEI in the Department of Psychiatry. Her academic appointment is through Yale School of Medicine.
Dr. Lekwauwa completed her MD at Duke University (2011) followed by adult psychiatry residency at Yale (2011-2015), where she earned prestigious awards including the AACAP Junior Scholar Award and APA Child Psychiatry Fellowship. She further specialized with a child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Yale Child Study Center (2015-2017), serving as Chief Fellow. Prior to returning to Yale, she directed psychiatric services at UConn Counseling and Mental Health Services.
Her research focuses on mental health equity, spirituality's role in healthcare, and trauma-informed care. Notable projects include CHATogether family-centered care model, exploring religious beliefs' impact on health outcomes, and addressing disparities in mental health access. She has published widely in child psychiatry, geriatric mental health, and DEI initiatives.
As an educator, Dr. Lekwauwa has developed residency training programs, supervised clinical rotations at Branford Adolescent Day Hospital, and contributed to recruitment strategies emphasizing diversity. Her leadership in DEI includes systemic reforms to promote inclusive environments and resident wellbeing through structured mentorship programs and policy development.
