Royce Carroll is a Professor in Comparative Politics at the Department of Government, University of Essex, where he has held roles including Director of Summer Schools and Deputy Director of the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis. He previously served as Associate and Assistant Professor at Rice University. His research focuses on comparative political representation, elite/mass behavior, democratic institutions, political parties, ideology, and quantitative methodology.
Carroll holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from UC San Diego (2007) and dual B.A. degrees in Government and Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin (2000). His work spans global contexts including Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Ecuador, and the UK, addressing topics like legislative polarization, electoral behavior, and ideological congruence between elites and voters. His recent publications emphasize themes of affective polarization, partisan conflict, and the intersection of psychology with political decision-making.
His teaching and research leadership include directing summer school programs focused on social science data analysis, reflecting his expertise in quantitative methods. He has contributed to grants and funding initiatives supporting political research and education.
