Mia Costa is an Associate Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, where she also affiliates with the Program in Quantitative Social Science. Her research focuses on political representation, American politics, and the intersection of gender/race with political behavior. She employs experimental and quantitative methods to study topics like legislative communication, partisan polarization, and descriptive representation. Costa holds a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a B.A. from SUNY New Paltz.
Her work bridges representation theory and empirical analysis, emphasizing how identity and institutional contexts shape democratic processes. Key findings include the role of tone in constituent evaluations, the gender double bind in legislative communication, and the prioritization of policy congruence over affect in voter perceptions of representation.
Recent publications explore negative partisanship’s impact on voter decision-making, occupational diversity in legislatures, and ethics in political research. Costa teaches courses on quantitative methods, political representation, and experimental design. She actively mentors undergraduates in collaborative research projects and oversees a lab focused on elite communication and polarization.
