Roy Schwartzman

Dr. Roy Schwartzman is a Professor in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University and Co-Director of the Campus Writing and Speaking Program (CWSP). He previously served at UNC Greensboro as Head of the Department of Communication Studies and director of the Communication Across the Curriculum program. His research focuses on critical scholarship of teaching, public communication of science/medicine, and addressing propaganda and prejudice, particularly antisemitism. He co-authored over 30 articles with students and has received numerous awards, including the NCA Presidential Citation (2022) and Joyce Ferguson Award multiple times. Key grants include a $1.8M Title III grant at UNCG and the NCA’s largest grant, Cultivate Resilient Communities.

Research Interests: His work bridges rhetoric, education, and social justice. He examines how communication strategies can counter misinformation, build epistemic resilience, and address systemic inequities in education and healthcare. Notable projects include analyzing Holocaust survivor testimonies, vaccine hesitancy dynamics, and pandemic pedagogy innovations.

Advising & Leadership: As a former department head, he reformed institutional practices to foster care-based leadership. His advising research highlights systemic challenges in caregiving labor and student dependency. He co-edits works on feminist ethics and resilience in education.
