Roy Gutterman is a Professor at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at Syracuse University. He holds a courtesy appointment at the Syracuse University College of Law. His expertise spans communications law, the First Amendment, and legal issues impacting media and journalism. He previously worked as a reporter, clerked for a New Jersey Superior Court judge, and practiced litigation before transitioning to academia.

Gutterman’s research focuses on the intersection of courts and journalism, legal education reform, and free speech advocacy. He has delivered lectures globally at institutions such as the Communication University of China (Beijing), Fudan University (Shanghai), National Chengchi University (Taipei), and Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia). His book "L.Rev: the Law Review Experience in American Legal Education" (2002) is widely referenced in law school libraries.
He actively contributes to professional organizations: as former head of the AEJMC Law and Policy division (2019-2020), program director for the Burton Foundation for Legal Achievement, and committee member for the Society of Professional Journalists (Freedom of Information Committee, Legal Defense Fund Committee) and the Government Accountability Project (faculty committee in Washington, D.C.).
Gutterman led the Carnegie Legal Reporting Program at Newhouse from 2009–2010 and supports student initiatives through the SPJ student chapter and academic integrity committees. His career began with roles at The Boston Globe, The Courier-News, The Post-Standard, and The Daily Orange, alongside editorial leadership in law journal publishing.
