Rowena Gander is a researcher and performance artist affiliated with Liverpool John Moores University's English & Creative Arts department. Her work focuses on queer identity representation through dance, particularly exploring pole dance as a choreographic object and solo performance practices. She holds a PhD (2022), MA (2017), and BA (2015) in Dance Practices from the same institution.
Research interests include autoethnographic methods applied to stigmatized performance practices, lesbian visibility in art, and the intersection of queer theory with contemporary dance. Her recent works examine sapphic erotica, re-performances of Marina Abramović, and the cultural biography of performance objects.
Notable outputs include the 2024 article Sapphic Erotica in Pole Dance and the 2022 performance Barely Visible. Her research has been recognized through BBC Radio Merseyside interviews and participation in international conferences like Subject/Object/Practice/Place (2024) and The Glocalization of Dance (2022).
