Rouven Essig is a Professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stony Brook University. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. Postdoctoral work at SLAC preceded his faculty role since 2011.
- Education:
- B.Sc. (Hons) Physics, University of the Witwatersrand (2001)
- B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand (2002)
- Ph.D. in Physics, Rutgers University (2008)
His research focuses on dark matter and new physics beyond the Standard Model, pioneering sub-GeV dark matter detection and fixed-target experiments for new forces. Key experiments include SENSEI/OSCURA (direct detection), APEX/HPS (dark photons), and LBECA (liquid xenon probes). He has received major accolades including the New Horizons Prize and Simons Investigator Award.
Experimental collaborations span international institutions like Fermilab, Jefferson Lab, Brookhaven National Lab, and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. Advising includes over 20 students/postdocs, with active involvement in both theoretical and experimental programs.
- Key Awards:
- APS Fellow (2020)
- New Horizons in Physics Prize (2021)
- Simons Investigator (2019)
Labs/Teams: Leads SENSEI and APEX collaborations, co-leads OSCURA, and participates in HPS and LBECA experiments. Active in Fermi-LAT indirect dark matter searches.
