Ross Elfline is a Professor of Art History at Carleton College, specializing in modern and contemporary art with a focus on critical design strategies and radical architectural movements. He joined Carleton's faculty in 2009 after completing his PhD at the University of California-Los Angeles, where he studied under Miwon Kwon and Sylvia Lavin.
- Education: BA in Economics from Grinnell College, MA in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Elfline's research centers on the intersection of art, design, and socio-political discourse, notably his dissertation on the Italian Radical Architecture group Superstudio (1966-79). His teaching includes courses on Art and Democracy and Queer Art, reflecting his engagement with art's role in civic and identity-based frameworks.
Before academia, Elfline worked in museum education and research in Chicago. He also taught at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena while affiliated with the Getty Research Institute.
