Sylvia Lavin is a Professor of History and Theory of Architecture at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, where she also serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the Ph.D. Program. Previously, she was a Professor and Chair of UCLA’s Department of Architecture and Urban Design (1996–2006) and Director of its Critical Studies M.A. and Ph.D. programs (2007–2017). Her work bridges architectural history, theory, and curatorial practice, with a focus on postmodernism, modernism, and cultural critique.
Education: B.A. from Barnard College (Columbia University), M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology from Columbia University (1990). She has held fellowships from the Getty Center, Kress Foundation, and Social Science Research Council.
Research interests include postmodern architecture’s historiography, the interplay between architectural theory and cultural movements, and the material and institutional frameworks shaping architectural production. Her curatorial work includes exhibitions like Everything Loose Will Land: Art and Architecture in Los Angeles (1970s) and Exhibition Models, which explore how artifacts and spaces reflect broader cultural narratives.
Her publications include Architecture Itself and Other Postmodernization Effects (2020), Kissing Architecture (2011), and Form Follows Libido (2005). These works critically examine architectural autonomy, historical myth-making, and the socio-cultural dimensions of design.
