Rose Wellman

Rose Wellman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, affiliated with the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. Her research focuses on Iran, the Middle East, and Arab American communities in Detroit. She holds roles in the Center for Arab American Studies, Middle East Studies, and Women and Gender Studies, and collaborates with ACCESS’s Center for Arab American Narratives.

Her ethnographic work includes 15 months of field research in Iran (2007–2010), culminating in her book *Feeding Iran: Shi’i Families and the Making of the Islamic Republic*. Current projects examine Iraqi Shi’a migrants in Metro Detroit and Arab American experiences amid Islamophobia. Wellman teaches courses on Middle Eastern studies, Islam, kinship, and food cultures.

Her research spans foodways, kinship dynamics, religious practices, and diaspora communities. Recent work analyzes how Shi’i leaders in Detroit adapted to pandemic challenges. Key awards include grants from the National Science Foundation and Wenner-Gren Foundation.

Wellman has organized major conferences like *Ethnography of Iran: Past and Present* and co-edited volumes exploring spiritual kinship across Abrahamic religions. Her interdisciplinary collaborations include the Healthy Dearborn Coalition, addressing public health challenges in Southeast Michigan.
