Dr. Rose Thorogood is an Associate Professor at the University of Helsinki's Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE). She serves as Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Wildlife Biology. She obtained her PhD in Zoology from the University of Cambridge in 2010 and was a Research Fellow there from 2013-2018.
Her research focuses on:
- Evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology
- Wildlife conservation and human-animal interactions
- Population genetics and species adaptation
- Ecological impacts of anthropogenic changes
Her recent publications (2025) predominantly explore avian ecology, insect microbiomes, and evolutionary adaptations to environmental changes, with strong emphasis on conservation applications.
Awards:
- Maikki Friberg Award (2022)
She leads the Academy Project PRIORINFO: how the origins of behaviour shape eco-evolutionary outcomes of range expansions (2025-2029) and participates in the Wild Animal Phenotyping Infrastructure project. She has supervised Master's theses on avian behavior including:
- Defense strategies of cuckoo hosts
- Nest defense variation in Reed warblers
