Rosa Piro

Rosa Piro is a Full Professor of History of the Italian Language (SSD LIFI-01/A) at the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies (DiSLLC) of the University of Naples L'Orientale. She has been with the university since 2012, following research experience at Université d'Orléans and CNRS in Paris. Since 2021, she coordinates the Master's Program in Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners (LM 14) and directs the Research Center "Lessicografia dell'italoromanzo e delle lingue europee" (LeItaLie).

Her research interests span multiple areas of Italian linguistics, with particular focus on historical medical language, mystical language in religious and poetic texts, and contemporary Italian language studies. She has published extensively on these topics, including significant works such as "Almansore" (2011), "Glossario leonardiano di anatomia" (2019), and "L'italiano della medicina" (2022).

Her recent publications show a continued focus on medical language history, mystical language studies, and specialized linguistic fields. She has been particularly productive in 2024-2025 with multiple publications examining language in historical contexts, medical terminology, and specialized discourses.

She is actively involved in academic service, serving as scientific director of the series "Capitoli di storia linguistica della medicina" and as a member of the Scientific Committee for the series "Parole speciali. Lessico e linguaggi specialistici dell'italiano." She also collaborates with the University of Sfax (Tunisia) teaching Italian Linguistics.

Professor Piro teaches courses in Italian Linguistics and History of the Italian Language across multiple programs including Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners, Comparative Literatures and Cultures, Ancient Cultures and Archaeology, and Linguistic and Cultural Mediation. Her research activities are well-aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good health and well-being) and 4 (Quality education).
