Dr Rory McInnes-Gibbons is a Post Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. Their work focuses on classical reception, particularly the evolving relationship between modern societies and antiquity. Rory holds a BA and MA in Classics from Durham University, followed by doctoral research on Palmyra in Roman Syria.
Current research explores the visual archive and cultural afterlife of Palmyra’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, analyzing its influence on 18th-century European art and architecture through Robert Wood’s Ruins of Palmyra (1753). This project emphasizes the role of classical revival in shaping Western perceptions of antiquity.
Rory co-coordinates the Durham University project Classics and Class in the North-East, aiming to democratize access to classical education via community engagement. They have four years of teaching experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, covering modules on Greek drama, Roman history, and Latin language.
Rory’s work bridges archival research and public outreach, with a focus on material legacies like Hadrian’s Wall. Their research highlights the socio-political significance of antiquity’s afterlife, particularly in contexts of conflict and cultural heritage preservation.
