Dr. DAVOINE's research interests span multiple interconnected fields including the urban history of the Roman world, History of Late Antiquity, History of heritage and memory, History of construction, and the specific study of the city of Rome in Antiquity. His work examines how Roman authorities and citizens managed urban spaces, particularly in response to destruction through natural disasters, warfare, or simple decay over time. He investigates the legal frameworks governing urban maintenance, the cultural significance of ruins in Roman society, and how emperors used restoration projects as tools of political legitimacy.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory focused on the relationship between urban destruction, restoration practices, and political power in the Roman world. His work demonstrates how ruins were not merely physical remnants but active elements in cultural memory, political discourse, and urban identity. Through examination of epigraphic, literary, and legal sources, DAVOINE has established important connections between physical urban landscapes and the ideological frameworks that shaped Roman approaches to city management across centuries.
Dr. DAVOINE has collaborated extensively with scholars including Maxime L'Héritier, Cécile Troadec, and Hélène Dessales on numerous publications. His work appears in prestigious journals such as Pallas. Review of Ancient Studies, Urban History, and Syria. Archaeology, Art and History, as well as with major academic publishers including Publications de l'École française de Rome and Ausonius Editions. His research contributes significantly to our understanding of how ancient societies conceptualized and managed their built environments through periods of transformation and crisis.
