Rory Magrath is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Solent University, working in the Department of Social Sciences and Nursing. His career began at Solent in 2011 as a part-time lecturer, progressing to lecturer (2014), senior lecturer (2016), and associate professor (2020). He holds a BA in Football Studies from Solent (2010), an MSc in Sociology of Sport from Loughborough University, and a PhD. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
His research focuses on gender, sexuality, and masculinities within sport contexts, including LGBTQ+ inclusion, men’s friendships, media representation, and athlete activism. He has conducted studies on anti-homophobia policies in football, transgender athlete participation, and head trauma in sports like rugby. Magrath is an Associate Editor of Sport in Society and sits on editorial boards for Sociology and Managing Sport and Leisure. He co-edits the Palgrave Studies in Masculinity, Sport and Exercise book series.
