Dr. Rorie Beswick-Parsons is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the School of Geography and Planning, University of Sheffield, where his research centers on sustainability and social change through the lens of packaging systems and consumer practices.
His academic journey includes:
- BA (Hons) in Geography from the University of Hull
- ESRC funded Masters in Planning and Environment Research
- PhD from Newcastle University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (2013-2018)
Rorie investigates how consumer practices adapt to alternative packaging systems and how business practices, technologies, and markets interact in packaging-related change processes. His methodological approach uniquely combines ethnography, archival analysis, and secondary data research across historical and contemporary contexts, revealing critical insights into sustainable consumption patterns and systemic resistance to change.
His publication record (2016-2025) demonstrates consistent interdisciplinary focus on plastic waste reduction, reusable packaging systems, and socio-technical dynamics, bridging environmental science, behavioral studies, and policy analysis. The work increasingly integrates simulation modeling and cross-national comparisons to address real-world sustainability challenges.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship
Rorie has secured significant research funding through major projects including Plastics: Redefining single-use (EPSRC), Many Happy Returns (NERC), and Horizon Europe initiatives, developing evidence-based frameworks for sustainable packaging reuse. His collaborative work spans environmental science, behavioral psychology, and industrial design to create implementable solutions.
He actively contributes to the University of Sheffield's research ecosystem through the School of Geography and Planning, leading investigations into systemic solutions for plastic packaging reuse in mass-market applications while mentoring emerging researchers in sustainability science.
