Ronald Walcott is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Georgia, affiliated with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. (1999), M.S. (1995), and B.S. (1993) in Plant Pathology from Iowa State University and the University of Georgia. His research focuses on seedborne pathogens, particularly bacterial and fungal agents affecting crops like cotton and watermelon, with emphasis on molecular detection techniques and seed treatment strategies.
Academic roles include Professor (since 2012), Assistant Dean for Diversity (2008–2013), and prior positions as Associate/Assistant Professor. Key research areas include epidemiology of seedborne diseases, pathogen virulence mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions. He leads projects on bacterial fruit blotch of cucurbits and cotton bacterial blight, integrating genomic and ecological approaches.
His work spans over 129 scholarly publications, emphasizing pathogen genetics, seed health, and agricultural sustainability. Notable contributions include studies on Acidovorax citrulli virulence factors and the role of quorum sensing in bacterial pathogenesis. He collaborates widely, securing grants from NSF, USDA, and international agencies to advance plant disease management and equity in STEM education.
