Bhabesh Dutta is a Professor and Extension Vegetable Disease Specialist in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Georgia, affiliated with the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. His work focuses on managing plant diseases affecting vegetables like watermelon, onions, and cabbage, emphasizing bacterial and fungal pathogens such as Fusarium wilt, gummy stem blight, and bacterial spot. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of Georgia (2011) and leads research on disease-resistant cultivars, organic farming challenges, and sustainable pest management strategies.
Key research includes a USDA-funded study on organic onion production challenges, exploring weed and thrips management, and evaluating organic fertilizers’ impact on disease susceptibility. His extension efforts address downy mildew in cucurbits and fungicide resistance monitoring. Collaborations span institutions like Michigan State University and USDA, targeting pathogenomics and integrated pest management.
Recent projects include optimizing irrigation schedules for anthracnose control and assessing broccoli cultivar resistance to Alternaria brassicicola. His work highlights innovative solutions like nanotechnology-formulated pesticides and micronutrient-driven plant immunity. Dutta’s contributions are documented in peer-reviewed journals and applied through UGA Extension programs to benefit farmers in Georgia and beyond.
