Charles C Block is a Research Scientist IV and Co-Director of the National Seed Health System at Iowa State University's Seed Science Center. His expertise focuses on plant pathology, seed health testing, and crop disease management. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in relevant fields from Iowa State University and Briar Cliff University.
Research interests include bacterial and fungal pathogens in crops like corn, sunflower, and maize. He develops diagnostic methods for seedborne pathogens (e.g., Xanthomonas, Pantoea, Clavibacter) and evaluates disease resistance in crops. His work integrates molecular biology, greenhouse testing, and field studies to address agricultural challenges.
Publications emphasize seed health diagnostics, disease ecology, and crop protection strategies. He collaborates with USDA-ARS and contributes to national plant disease surveys. His recent work includes studies on bacterial leaf streak, Sclerotinia rot, and emerging pathogens in U.S. sunflower and maize crops.
Affiliations include the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station. Research extends to seed storage conditions, disinfestation methods, and pathogen survival mechanisms.
