Ronald M. Epstein

Ronald M. Epstein, M.D. is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Medicine, Palliative Care at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and co-directs the Center for Communication and Disparities Research and Mindful Practice Programs.

Dr. Epstein holds an MD from Harvard Medical School (1984) and a BA in Music from Wesleyan University (1976). He was the first George Engel and John Romano Dean's Teaching Scholar at the University of Rochester.

His research focuses on patient-physician communication, mindfulness in medicine, professional well-being, and patient-centered care in serious illness. He has published over 300 scholarly articles and authored the book Attending: Medicine, Mindfulness and Humanity. His recent work emphasizes shared decision-making, palliative care for older adults with advanced illness, caregiver involvement, and physician resilience.

His 15 most recent publications reveal a strong focus on palliative care interventions, decision-making in nephrology and oncology, caregiver dynamics, and the psychological underpinnings of clinical practice.
