Professor Ronald J. Zboray is a Professor of Communication and Director of Graduate Studies in Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. He holds affiliate faculty positions in Cultural Studies and Women’s Studies. With a PhD from New York University, his research focuses on biographical approaches to communication, disability studies, Civil War media, and print culture. His work with collaborator Mary Saracino Zboray includes groundbreaking studies like Armless Entertainers in Early America and The Bullet in the Book, exploring marginalized voices and material culture. Their 2019 article Recovering Disabled Veterans in Civil War Newspapers won the AEJMC’s Sweeny Prize. He has also published extensively on women’s political engagement in antebellum America, including the award-winning Voices Without Votes.
Teaching includes online courses on mass media history and graduate seminars on oral history, disability culture, and media audiences. He has advised over 20 doctoral students now in tenure-track roles at institutions worldwide. Supported by a 2012 NEH fellowship, his research bridges print culture, war studies, and gender analysis.
Award-winning publications include Everyday Ideas (2006) and U.S. Popular Print Culture to 1860 (2019). His work has been recognized with the Cathy Covert Prize (1996), Wrage-Baskerville Prize (2010), and multiple book awards. Ongoing projects explore Civil War reading practices and disability narratives, reflecting his commitment to recovering overlooked histories.
