Ronald J. Triolo is a tenured Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedics at Case Western Reserve University, and a Senior Career Scientist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He serves as Executive Director of the Advanced Platform Technology Center (APTC) within the VA, overseeing the design and production of medical devices for individuals with sensorimotor impairments or limb loss. He also directs the Motion Study Laboratory at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, focusing on neuroprosthetics, biomechanics, and assistive technology.
His education includes a BS in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University (1980), MS degrees in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering from Drexel University (1982, 1984), and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel (1986). His research interests emphasize restoring mobility through neuroprosthetics, functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS), and rehabilitation engineering. He leads NIH- and DoD-funded programs to enhance upright mobility, posture, and balance in neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders.
Key projects include long-term studies on implanted neuroprostheses, sensory restoration in amputees, and feedback-controlled systems for postural stability. His work bridges clinical and engineering challenges, with over 125 peer-reviewed publications and innovations in medical device design.
