Ronald J. Friis is a Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Furman University. He specializes in 20th-21st century Mexican and Chilean poetry, with a focus on interdisciplinary connections between poetry and visual arts. His research includes monographs on poets like José Emilio Pacheco and Alberto Blanco, and he co-authored the Spanish conversation textbook Doble Vía.
Education: PhD and MA from Penn State University, BA from Dickinson College. He has directed study-abroad programs in Costa Rica, Chile, and Spain, and developed unique courses like 'Hispanic Cultures through Food' and 'Food and Identity in Latin America.' His work integrates translation studies, pedagogy, and cultural analysis.
Research highlights include studies on Neruda, Tomás Harris, and Frida Kahlo intersections. He received the Furman Standard Research Grant (2017-2020) and has published widely in Hispania, Chasqui, and Revista de Estudios Hispánicos.
Teaching contributions include innovative May Experience courses and curriculum development. His current projects explore Alberto Blanco's poetics and the interplay between poetry and painting.
