Ron Levi is Distinguished Professor of Global Justice with joint appointments at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and Department of Sociology, University of Toronto. His research examines responses to violence, repression, and atrocities through legal institutions and collective memory, with particular focus on how legal ideas circulate globally. He directs the Global Justice Lab, which supports justice systems under stress.
Levi's research interests include international criminal law, legal cynicism, police-minority relations, and the sociology of atrocities. His work integrates political sociology with legal studies to analyze how legal frameworks operate in diverse political contexts.
He has received the Chevalier in l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques (French government), Global Educator Award (University of Toronto), and Ludwik and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize. His current projects examine legal responses to state violence and the role of expertise in postcolonial governance.
Levi serves as Secretary of the Law and Society Association and Council Member for the Sociology of Law section of the American Sociological Association. He teaches courses on law in global affairs, police violence, and the sociology of atrocities.
