Ronald J. Deibert is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. He specializes in cybersecurity, digital rights, and the intersection of technology with global security and human rights. His work includes groundbreaking investigations into spyware (e.g., NSO Group’s Pegasus), internet censorship, and transnational repression targeting civil society. Deibert co-founded the OpenNet Initiative and Information Warfare Monitor, and advises organizations like PEN Canada and Human Rights Watch.
His research spans over 120 reports, including landmark studies on Ghostnet, China’s Great Cannon, and Saudi dissident surveillance. He authored influential books like *Black Code* and *Reset*, winning the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing. Awards include the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award, Order of Ontario, and multiple international recognitions.
Deibert teaches courses such as *Democracy in the Social Media Age* and leads the Citizen Lab, which focuses on policy engagement and technical research to combat digital threats to freedom.
