Rolf H. Weber is Professor of Private, Commercial and European Law at the University of Zurich's Faculty of Law. He founded the Center for Information and Communication Law (ZIK) which evolved into the Center for Information Technology, Society, and Law (ITSL), establishing himself as a pioneer in technology law scholarship in Switzerland.
Born in Zurich in 1951, Weber completed his law doctorate at the University of Zurich in 1975/1979 and received his habilitation there in 1986. After serving as an Attorney at Law since 1978 and completing a visiting scholar position at Harvard Law School, he began his academic career with teaching assignments at the University of St. Gallen from 1983 before joining the University of Zurich faculty. He was appointed Adjunct Professor in 1992 and became a full Professor in 1996.
Professor Weber's research focuses on the regulatory challenges at the intersection of law and digital transformation, with particular expertise in Commercial Law, Financial Market Law, and Technology Law. His work addresses critical issues in financial market regulation, e-commerce frameworks, and competition law within digital ecosystems, contributing significantly to understanding how traditional legal frameworks adapt to technological innovation.
He has supervised numerous doctoral dissertations requiring candidates to submit project outlines in commercial law, financial market law, information and communications law, e-commerce law, technology law, and competition law. His leadership extended to serving as Delegate for International Relations of the Faculty of Law (2005-2011) and Chairman of the Appeals Board of the SIX Swiss Exchange.
Professor Weber founded the Center for Information and Communication Law at the University of Zurich in 1998, creating a dedicated research hub that later transformed into the Center for Information Technology, Society, and Law (ITSL), reflecting the evolving nature of his scholarly focus on technology's societal and legal implications.
