Dr. Roland van Oostveen is a Professor and Associate Dean, Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University. He leads the Educational Informatics Laboratory (EILab), focusing on Human-Computer-Human Interactions (HCHI), and directs the BA in Educational Studies and Digital Technology (ESDT) program. His work emphasizes online learning communities, problem-based learning (PBL), and digital technology integration.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from the University of Toronto
- 18 years in K-12 science education, including roles as Science Curriculum Coordinator for the Toronto District School Board
Research Interests:
- Online curriculum development and virtual environment design
- Problem-Based Learning in digital spaces
- Assessment of digital competencies (via tools like GELO/GreX)
- Equity in fully online learning communities (FOLC)
Awards:
- Conference Best Paper Award at EdMedia 2016 for work on FOLC models
Advising & Labs: Oversees the EILab and contributes to the ESDT program’s Problem/Inquiry-Based Learning focus. Teaches across undergraduate and graduate programs in education and computer science.
