Prof. Roland Mees is a Professor of Practice of Business Ethics at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business, holding a part-time appointment since September 2022. He serves as Director of Sustainable Finance at ING Wholesale Banking, combining over 30 years of banking experience with academic contributions. His work bridges business ethics, sustainability, and financial practices.
He earned a master’s in Philosophy in Business (Utrecht University) and a PhD in Ethics (Utrecht University), both pursued alongside full-time banking roles. His research focuses on sustainable action barriers, moral corruption, and institutional sustainability pathways. Collaborating with Prof. Boudewijn de Bruin, he develops educational programs in business ethics and sustainable finance.
Mees contributes to the University of Groningen’s Ethics, Economics & Finance (EE&F) department, addressing sustainable development, banking ethics, and corporate governance. His academic freedom allows independent research and publications on topics like sustainability-linked loans, climate change ethics, and ESG integration in finance.
He frequently engages with media and public forums, discussing climate responsibility, circular economy philosophies, and sustainable finance innovations. His recent work critiques affluent nations' climate obligations and explores motivational strategies for sustainable behavior at individual and institutional levels.
