Prof. Dr. Roland M. Schmid is a Professor of Internal Medicine specializing in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endocrinology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where he serves as Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II at Klinikum rechts der Isar. He has held this position since 2002 and previously served as Vice Dean from 2007-2010. From 2018-2023, he was the Spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1321 "Modelling and Targeting Pancreatic Cancer."
His educational background includes:
- 1979-1985: Medical studies at University of Ulm
- 1987: Dr. med. (summa cum laude) at University of Ulm
- 1995: Habilitation for Internal Medicine at University of Ulm
- 2005: Executive EMBA, University of St. Gallen
Prof. Schmid's research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of pancreatic carcinogenesis and translating these findings into diagnostic and therapeutic concepts. His laboratory investigates the role of tumor-relevant gene alterations using transgenic and knock-in mouse models. A key focus is on the connection between oxidative stress, chronic inflammatory processes, and tumor development. His team has developed genetic models of chronic pancreatitis to study the significance of chronic inflammation in pancreatic carcinogenesis and to establish preventive and therapeutic approaches. His work also examines tumor survival mechanisms, identifying cellular components essential for tumor maintenance and characterizing their functions at molecular, genetic, and cellular levels.
Analysis of Prof. Schmid's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on pancreatic cancer biology, particularly in understanding metabolic reprogramming, KRAS signaling pathways, tumor microenvironment interactions, and molecular mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression. His research spans from basic molecular mechanisms to translational applications, including personalized oncology approaches using patient-derived organoids.
Among his notable recognitions:
- Heinz Maier Leibnitz Medal, TUM (2008)
- Merckle Research Prize, University of Ulm (2001)
- Ludwig Heilmeyer Silver Medal, German Society for Advances in Internal Medicine (1998)
- Wolf-Boas Prize, German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (1986)
Prof. Schmid actively participates in academic service, serving on the advisory board of the German Cancer Aid and as a member of editorial boards for renowned scientific journals including Gastroenterology and World Journal of Gastroenterology. He leads a research group investigating pancreatic carcinogenesis, working closely with Dr. Henrik Einwächter and a team of researchers including postdocs, medical students, and technical staff.
His laboratory, the Working Group of Prof. Dr. Roland M. Schmid and Dr. Henrik Einwächter, focuses on the molecular basis of pancreatic carcinogenesis and tumor survival, with particular attention to the connection between oxidative stress, chronic inflammatory processes, and tumor development. The group utilizes transgenic and knock-in mouse models to study the role of tumor-relevant mutations in pancreatic cancer pathogenesis.
