Dr. Roland Kern is a research staff member in the Department of Neurobiology at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Biology. He maintains dual affiliations with both the Active Sensing and Neurobiology research groups, and is also associated with the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) as a Responsible Investigator.
His research focuses on visual systems and sensory processing in insects, with particular expertise in visual position stabilization mechanisms. He teaches courses including Behavior / neural mechanisms, From Perception to Behavior, and Methods for analyzing neuro- and behavioral biological data. His work connects to Bielefeld University's strategic research area in the Socio-Technical World, which examines capabilities enabling agents to act and communicate in complex environments.
Kern has been a member of the research staff at Bielefeld University since 1996, following postdoctoral work in Australia. His research has strong interdisciplinary connections between biology, neuroscience, and cognitive interaction technology.
His academic background includes:
- Doctoral studies (1992-1994) on visual position stabilization in hawk moths at the University of Tübingen
- Diploma thesis (1991) on rotation detectors in rock crabs
- Undergraduate studies in Biology (1984-1990) at the University of Tübingen
