Dr. Jens Peter Lindemann is a researcher at the University of Bielefeld, affiliated with the Faculty of Biology's Department of Neurobiology and the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC). He has served as a member of research staff since 2006 and holds the position of Responsible Investigator at CITEC.
His academic background includes:
- PhD in Neurobiology (2006) with thesis "Visual Navigation of a Virtual Blowfly"
- Diploma in Applied Computer Science in the natural sciences (1998)
- Undergraduate studies in Applied Computer Science (1992-1998)
Lindemann's research focuses on modeling neural mechanisms through numerical simulations to test experimentally established hypotheses, particularly examining how seemingly simple neural mechanisms demonstrate unexpected emergent properties in closed-loop situations. His work bridges neurobiology and robotics through the transfer of bio-inspired algorithms for visual navigation to mobile robots, inspired by how insects solve complex behavioral control with minimal neural resources. He also develops specialized virtual reality systems for walking and flying insects requiring high-frame-rate panoramic imaging and real-time animal-machine interfaces.
His research aligns with Bielefeld University's strategic "Socio-Technical World" research area, which investigates capabilities enabling agents like humans, robots, and AI to function in complex environments. Within the Faculty of Biology, he serves on the Doctoral Committee and as an IKM Officer, contributing to academic governance and student supervision.
