Roland Duer Irving (1847–1888) was an American geologist and professor at the University of Wisconsin (1870–1888). He held the academic rank of Professor in the Department of Geology and Mineralogy. His career included roles as assistant state geologist of Wisconsin (1878–1879) and geologist-in-charge of the Lake Superior division of the U.S. Geological Survey (1882–1888). He earned a PhD from Columbia College School of Mines (1869 graduate, 1879 PhD).
His research focused on micro-petrography, pre-Cambrian stratigraphy, and the genesis of crystalline rocks. Notable contributions include studies on Wisconsin’s geology, Lake Superior’s copper-bearing rocks, and Archaean formations in the northwestern U.S. His work laid foundational advancements in microscopic rock analysis in the U.S., earning him recognition as a pioneer in petrography.
Irving’s publications spanned regional surveys, mineralogy, and stratigraphic classification. He was posthumously eulogized by John Wesley Powell in the 1889 U.S. Geological Survey report, highlighting his scientific legacy.
