Rohit K Dasgupta

Rohit K Dasgupta is an Associate Professor of Gender & Sexuality at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Department of Gender Studies. He previously held roles as Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow (where he remains an Honorary Senior Research Fellow) and has taught at institutions including Loughborough University, University of Southampton, and University of the Arts London. His research focuses on queer politics, diaspora studies, media & cultural production, and cultural labor, with a particular emphasis on South Asian contexts. He has also engaged in policy work as an elected councillor in London's Newham Borough, addressing equalities, social justice, and cultural issues.

His academic work combines ethnographic and creative methodologies, exploring themes such as digital queer cultures in India, queer diasporic cultural production in Britain, and the intersection of sexuality, class, and belonging. Notable publications include "Digital Queer Cultures in India" (2017) and "Queering Digital India" (2018), the latter receiving an Honourable Mention from Pen America. He currently edits two book series: Ethnographic Innovations, South Asian Perspectives (Routledge) and South Asian Screens (Bloomsbury).

Dasgupta’s research often examines transnational queer communities, digital media’s role in activism and identity formation, and the impact of new authoritarian regimes on queer lives. His work bridges critical theory with grassroots activism, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understand cultural labor, migration, and resistance in contemporary global contexts.

Recent articles highlight his engagement with topics such as transgender-inclusive sanitation policies in South Asia, queer digital assemblages during the pandemic, and the cultural industries of India. His scholarship consistently critiques neoliberal frameworks while centering marginalized voices in both academic and public spheres.
