Roger Watson is an Honorary Professor of Nursing at the University of Hull, UK. He holds multiple visiting and adjunct professorships globally, including at institutions in Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, and Ireland. With a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Sheffield and a nursing qualification from St George’s Hospital, London, his expertise spans gerontology, dementia care, and nursing education. His research focuses on mealtime difficulties in older adults with dementia, nursing workforce development, and psychometric scale validation.
Watson has served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Advanced Nursing and currently leads Nurse Education in Practice. He has been recognized with prestigious awards, including induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2017) and multiple fellowships from professional bodies like the Royal College of Nursing and Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. His academic contributions include over 249 publications, emphasizing evidence-based practice and healthcare quality improvement.
Watson has supervised numerous PhD students globally, focusing on topics such as diabetes education, nursing retention strategies, and competency frameworks in cardiac care. His work frequently addresses cross-cultural validation of assessment tools, such as the Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia (EdFED) scale, and explores challenges in implementing care interventions for vulnerable populations.
