Roger Michael O'Keefe is a Full Professor of International Law and Chair of the International Law Group at Bocconi University since 2018. He concurrently serves as Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL), where he was previously a full Professor of Public International Law (2014–2018). Before that, he spent 15 years at the University of Cambridge (1999–2014), holding roles as Senior Lecturer in Law, Deputy Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, and Fellow of Magdalene College.
His research focuses on canonical topics in public international law including sources of law, treaty interpretation, state immunity, state responsibility, and cultural heritage protection. He also explores specialized areas like international criminal law, humanitarian law, and human rights law. His work bridges theoretical analysis with practical applications, particularly regarding the interaction between domestic and international legal systems.
As joint General Editor of the Oxford Monographs in International Law series, he contributes to shaping scholarly discourse. His recent publications address themes such as jurisdictional immunities, cultural property protection in conflict zones, and state accountability mechanisms. His writing often critiques legal gaps and proposes innovative frameworks for addressing modern challenges in international law.
O'Keefe’s career reflects a commitment to academic rigor and institutional leadership. He has advised on legal reforms and frequently participates in international legal consultations, combining theoretical expertise with practical policy impact.
