Roger Kirchner was an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Carleton College, where he taught for 38 years before retiring in 2000. A 1958 Carleton graduate, he began his career as an Instructor in Mathematics and became a cornerstone of the department, known for integrating computers into the math curriculum and pioneering the use of computer graphics in calculus education. He led National Science Foundation (NSF) institutes for mathematics teachers, focusing on innovative educational tools.
His research interests spanned mathematics education, computational methods, and programming languages. Colleagues and students highlighted his deep knowledge, inventive teaching style, and mentorship, which inspired many to pursue advanced degrees and careers in mathematics and computer science. Beyond academia, he was remembered for his intellectual curiosity, humor, and dedication to collaboration.
Though no formal awards are listed, his legacy is reflected in the countless students he mentored and the lasting impact of his NSF workshops. He is survived by his wife Kay, four children, and extended family.
