Professor Maldwyn Mills (1926–2019) served at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1959 to 1993, progressing through roles including Assistant Lecturer (1959), Senior Lecturer (1967), Reader (1974), and Professor (1979). He was Acting Head of his Department from 1974 to 1985 and later became Professor Emeritus. His academic focus centered on Middle English Romances (e.g., Lybeaus Desconus) and Chaucer, with significant contributions to conferences and publications like Six Middle English Romances. He collaborated across departments to train students in manuscript and archival work.
Renowned for his ebullient teaching style and mentorship, he inspired countless students to pursue PhDs and academic careers. Beyond academia, his passions included Dickens and Metaphysical Poetry, Romanesque architecture photography, Haydn’s classical music, and vintage cinema curation. In his later years, he contributed to the Age Cymru ‘Valuing Veterans’ project, documenting his wartime experiences for the National Library of Wales archive.
Known affectionately as the ‘Welsh Wizard’ for his engaging persona and mentorship, he maintained lifelong connections with students and colleagues. His legacy includes a memorial conference organized by Dr. Jennifer Fellows and a vibrant academic and personal influence remembered by peers and alumni.
